DOMAIN

I purchased porcelina.net in September 2000 and launched it shortly thereafter. In some ways, it seems as though it has been many dramatically different websites over the years, but in reality, it's always been the same thing: a small collection of the things that make up me.

I got the name "Porcelina" from a Smashing Pumpkins song, "Porcelina of the Vast Oceans." I was moody and listening to a lot of loud music at the time, but the song in question was very quiet and melodic, at least by Smashing Pumpkins standards. It seemed fragile, which was how I felt at the time, and the idea of porcelain summed my emotions up well, so I went with it. The song itself meant nothing to me – it still doesn't – but the name has survived all this time.

The site has always been just me – I was one of the few young women with a domain in the early 2000s who did not offer hosting, I believe – but I do have a few projects within. Although I'm hardly involved in the fandom world, I got involved with fanlistings over time. It gives me an opportunity to celebrate things I love while also connecting with interesting people from around the world and simultaneously developing my web design skills. Intensité is my collective, found here.

Free College Applications, found here, has a far more practical purpose. It's a simple idea that has since become one of the most visited college admissions resources on the Internet. I would eventually like to move it elsewhere, but it's not a priority right now.

And that's really it for this little place of my own. Simplify, simplify, simplify. And onward.
