ABOUT DAVID THE GNOME

David the Gnome was a Spanish-Canadian animated children's television series that told the stories of the life of David, a gnome who lived with his wife, Lisa, and his best friend, a fox named Swift. At age 399, David was the oldest gnome in the forest and considered the wisest among them. David was also a doctor and frequently performed procedures to help heal gnomes and forest creatures alike. Other characters included David and Lisa's granddaughter, Susan, and the Trolls, Holler, Pit, Pat, and Pot.

The show was notable among children's programs for its heavy emphasis on moral lessons. Although the prime lesson was that bigger size does not make you more important, other recurring themes were the importance of protecting and respecting the environment, shunning materialism, being peaceful instead of fighters, and living in harmony with and caring for animals.

David the Gnome was originally created and aired in Spain under the name David el Gnomo. The series was based on the children's books about gnomes by Dutch author Wil Huygen and illustrated by Rien Poortvliet. Working with the Canadian animated company Cinar, the producers eventually made two seasons of the show and 26 different episodes.
